Susuwe Island is teeming with wildlife

It has been an incredibly special time at Susuwe as far as game sightings in the surrounding Bwabwata National Park in the Caprivi are concerned. The park is teeming with game and guests have had the pleasure of two separate sightings of leopard.

One sighting was of male leopard that lay on a horizontal branch and gave our guests a relatively unheard of forty-five minutes of photography time. Another spectacular sighting was that of three lionesses, one carrying a cub in her mouth and another walking gracefully with her 3 cubs. The lioness carrying the cub placed her little one down and proceeded to collect a duiker kill, which she had recently taken down behind a small cluster of trees.

The elephants in the area are slowly moving in large numbers towards Horseshoe bend on the Kwando River.

Susuwe Island Lodge is included in our 5-Rivers Special, running until 31st March 2012.

Deception Valley Lodge has elephants!!

The large volume of rain received in this area of the Kalahari has resulted in a herd of elephants moving into the concession – very unusual for the Kalahari but a superb sighting for guests.

The guests have also witnessed lions mating, along with numerous sightings of other cats in the last two weeks. Deception Valley Lodge is reported to look like an animal nursery school at the moment as many of the herbivores have had their calves. Young hartebeest, Oryx and wildebeest can be seen running around for the most part of each day.

We are still running the Summer special until 31st March 2012.

Bedroom at Kaingu Safari Lodge in Kafue Park

The Kafue River and especially the sections above and below the Lodge are truly spectacular, with many forested islands and narrow channels to explore for birding, fishing or just soaking up the beauty of the area in a complete isolation. To appreciate this pristine river, Kaingu has also invested in new, quieter and environmentally friendly 4-stroke motors on boats customised for fishing, birding or simply cruising the river.

Wildlife – Guests of recent have been spoilt by large herds of Impala, Sable antelope, a territorial pack of Wild dog and many sightings of leopard, just to name a few. The first sighting of leopard this year was of a mother and her half grown cub, she spent 10 minutes watching the vehicle and its occupants before moving off into the bush. Bungee Jumping resumes Vic Falls

This concerns the incident involving an Australian tourist which occurred on the 31st December 2011 and whereby the bungee cord she was jumping on broke, we now wish to update you as follows;

Firstly we would like to advise that the lady concerned has recovered very well and has now returned to Australia. We continue to wish her well now that she is back home.

Secondly we are pleased to announce that following a thorough investigation into the incident bungee jumping will recommence on the 2nd February 2012.

Since the incident a full and thorough investigation into the cause of the bungee cord failure was conducted which amongst other things included;
A detailed safety audit and inspection of the bungee jumping system at Victoria Falls. Subjecting the broken bungee cord to forensic analysis and testing.

During this process of investigation we chose to suspend bungee jumping operations so that the inspectors could carry out their work without interruption and to allow time for the forensic analysis to be carried out. Unfortunately this process took more time than we anticipated due to the availability of the experts.. We have been carrying out bungee jumping in accordance with this code {international standard (AS/NZS 5848:2000) for bungee jumping. } from the Victoria Falls bridge for over 17 years where approximately 150,000 jumps have been done without there ever having been a cord failure. The inspection of the cord which broke was carried out by a team of experts based in South Africa which was lead by two Professors in Structural Engineering. In their investigations the team amongst other things, compared the rubber used to make the bungee cord that broke against the latest batch of rubbers we obtained directly from our normal supplier. Our understanding of the investigation findings is that the rubbers from the cord which broke were not as strong as they should have been and were weaker than the newer rubbers. We will be taking this up with the rubber manufacturers. The newer rubbers which we will now use were found to be far stronger than the “Code of Practice for Bungy Jumping” requires. To ensure as best as possible the strength and integrity of all rubbers we use, we are arranging to have samples from every future batch of rubber tested before being put into service.

In light of the investigations and the opinions of both the safety auditors and the forensic investigators we are satisfied that the cause of the broken cord has been established and that the new standards, testing and inspection methods we have introduced will prevent a recurrence of the incident.

We are therefore pleased to announce that commercial bungee jumping operations will recommence on the 2nd February 2012.

Zambia renames International Airports

Re-naming of Zambian Airports

As one of the first actions taken by the new Zambian president, Lusaka, Livingstone and Ndola International Airports have been renamed, effective September 27. Commenting on the renaming, President Michael Sata said: “We have to reconcile with the past because without the past, there will be no present, there will be no future.”

Lusaka International Airport is now called Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in honour of the country’s first President, Dr Kenneth Kaunda.

Livingstone International has been renamed Harry Mwanga Nkumbula Internaional Airport after a Northern Rhodesian Nationalist  leader who assisted in the struggle for Zambia’s independence.

Ndola International Airport is now called Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport after the United Progressive Party leader and former vice president.

Access to Zambia and Zimbabwe

Emirates, flag carrier of the United Arab Emirates based out of Dubai, will extend its African network by adding flights to Lusaka, the capital of Zambia, and Harare, the capital city of Zimbabwe from 1 February 2012. The two cities will be linked with the Dubai-Lusaka-Harare service, which will be serviced by an A330-200 aircraft in a three-class configuration, five times weekly.

Zambezi Airlines

Please be advised that the operation of Zambezi Airlines has been suspended – apparently there have been concerns regarding the safety of their aeroplanes.

Yellow Fever update & Zimbabwe Visa

Yellow Fever Update

We would like to reiterate that as of 1 October 2011, proof of Yellow Fever inoculation is required when any visitor to Zambia flies into/returns to South Africa. Already required when visiting countries like Tanzania, Kenya, Congo and others in Africa, this is currently not a requirement for visiting Zambia specifically but if both Zambia and South Africa are included on the same itinerary, even if in transit on flights, it is a requirement for entry into South Africa.  While the checking of this has been somewhat erratic by immigration officials in both Zambia and South Africa, there have been occasions where boarding has been denied or flights are delayed as no certificate is being held by the traveller.

Visas for Zimbabwe

We have been made aware of delays experienced at the Zimbabwe border posts (Kazangula between Botswana and Zimbabwe, and Victoria Falls between Zambia and Livingstone) as a result of the processing of visas on entry. If possible and required, our recommendation is to obtain your Zimbabwe visa prior to arrival, as this will expedite the immigration process at both airport and border crossing.

Namibia – Skeleton Coast Flying Safari – new times

Please note that the 10h00 departure time for the Skeleton Coast Safari is no longer in place. This trip will depart Windhoek town from Eros between 08h00 and 09h30, dependent on all participants’ arrangements.

Please provide your guests’ hotel/transfer details so that Wilderness Air Namibia can contact them the day prior to confirm the departure time. It is possible to connect if guests are flying in from Sossusvlei on a circuit seat rate arriving at 08h55. Guests can be collected from Hosea Kutako International Airport (Windhoek) if necessary but arrival on a scheduled commercial flight must be by 07h30 latest. Our recommendation is that guests overnight in Windhoek the previous night – please note a transfer must be booked from the hotel to Eros Airport. If all the guests travelling on a specific departure spend the previous night in Windhoek, the flight will in all likelihood be scheduled for an earlier departure so it is vital that Wilderness Air receive details on prior travel arrangements.

The trip returns to Windhoek Eros Airport or Hosea Kutako International Airport (Windhoek) at approximately 16h00 and therefore guests either need to depart on an evening flight or overnight in Windhoek at the end of the safari as well.

Botswana – lack of qualfied walking guides – Nov 2011

News snippet from owners who have a number of camps in the Okavango Delta Jao Concession area:

Please be advised that walking will no longer be offered in the Jao Concession – which includes Jao, Kwetsani, Jacana and Tubu Tree camps. A shortage of walking qualified guides in Botswana and limited areas for walking due to animal congestion or high water levels as well as safety being of prime concern, has resulted in this decision. Activities still on offer include day and night game drives, mekoros, boating & fishing (both seasonal), birding and the hide sleep-out.

No more walking safaris at Jao, Jacana, Kwetsani or Tubu Tree Camps
